Harahan is a small town just past Old Jefferson. as you drive west on Jefferson Hwy. It is nestled between Old Jefferson on the East, and River Ridge on the West. Harahan was considered "out in the country" by Metairie folks not that long ago. In earlier days it was populated with dairy farms and lots of open space. Today, Harahan still has a hint of that small-town-country-charm when compared to Metairie or Kenner. Colonial Country Club is probably Harahan's most well known landmark, and that is located between on Jefferson Hwy and backs up to the Mississippi River levee. Although Harahan is just a little further out from New Orleans than is Metairie for example, it is still only about 25 to 30 minutes from the New Orleans CBD. The town of Harahan runs a tight ship, and is known for it's strict enforcement of speed limits and it's tough "no littering" enforcement as most locals have learned over the years. Harahan offers the contrast of the old and new with many smaller 1940's frame homes with the nearby big up-scale homes that are sometimes located just across Jefferson Hwy from each other. Expect to pay tad more for Harahan homes in many locations due to higher demand. Harahan has a larger share of senior citizens than other eastbank locations. It might be just the ticket if you want a location with a more "open feel" and slower-paced lifestyle... and who doesn't? :)
